Two demountable free cooling chillers for the Colt headquarters in Rome

Background

Colt strives to transform the way the world works through the power of connectivity. The Colt IQ Network connects 900+ data centres across Europe, Asia and North America’s largest business hubs, with over 29,000 on net buildings and growing.

Purposes

For the Rome headquarters, we have been commissioned to carry out the restyling of the refrigeration plant dedicated to cooling their servers. The new units should have guaranteed maximum levels of efficiency and reliability. So we replaced two units at the end of their cycle and expanded the cooling capacity of the system in accordance with the customer’s needs.

Project

We have developed two 220 kW VHR chillers, with scroll compressors, integrated free cooling, equipped with an inverter pump on the machine to balance the pressure drops on the water side when the unit is operating in free cooling mode, high performance radial “plug fans” and R410A refrigerant. The units ensure an energy efficiency EER> 3.0 in cooling mode and EER> 32.0 in free cooling mode.

Challenges

The greatest design challenge consisted in the fact that – having replaced and modified the position of the units inside the technical room, and being bound by fixed passages – we needed to divide the units into four blocks that could be disassembled and re-assembled inside the room. This was made possible thanks to the ability of our engineers who were able to develop ad hoc designs on the refrigerant circuit, on the electrical circuit with attached wiring and on the hydronic circuit.
